Grant program promotes arts and creativity in Alabama, with focus on arts education MONTGOMERY, Ala., (February 11, 2025) — The Alabama Arts License Plate Advisory Committee recently awarded 32 grants totaling $78,650. These grants will fuel arts education and community arts projects scheduled between January and September 2025, showcasing the power of community support through the Support the Arts license plate program. The success of this grant program is directly tied to the number of Support the Arts license plates sold. As more Alabama residents choose to display their support on their vehicles, the pool of available funding for arts initiatives grows, ensuring that arts programs can continue to flourish and expand their reach across the state. Since 2004, over $2 million in grants has been awarded to Alabama schools, municipalities, and arts organizations. The grants below are in response to applications submitted at the December 2024 deadline. John Coleman (Dothan) chairs the Alabama Arts License Plate Advisory Committee, which includes Allison Dillon-Jauken (Huntsville), Andy Meadows (Montgomery), and Donna Russell (Gadsden). The committee’s primary responsibility is to evaluate grant applications and issue awards that support arts programming and arts education. Members serve voluntarily, and one member is appointed by each of the following organizations or individuals: the Alabama State Council on the Arts, Alabama Arts Alliance, the State Department of Education, the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Nonprofit organizations, municipalities, universities, and schools interested in applying for Arts License Tag grant funding can find more information and submit applications at arts.alabama.gov. The next application deadline is June 15, 2025. Alabama residents are encouraged to join the effort to fund the arts by purchasing a Support the Arts plate via their county’s vehicle licensing office.
