Alabama Blues Touring and Recording Artist

Debbie Bond is a blues/Americana touring and recording artist who has performed nationally and internationally presenting her own music and as a support musician for many traditional Alabama blues artists, including Johnny Shines, Eddie Kirkland, Willie King, Shar Baby and many more.

She is founder of the Alabama Blues Project, a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote and preserve the state’s rich blues heritage. Under Debbie’s guidance, the Alabama Blues Project has presented blues education programs to thousands of school children and adults and garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious presidential Coming Up Taller Award and the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award. She has over has over 30 years experience as an arts educator presenting programs throughout the state and beyond in schools, libraries and festivals. Her programs always feature traditional Alabama blues musicians. Past guest artists have included Willie King, Eddie Kirkland, Little Lee, Shar Baby and Carroline Shines.

Debbie has developed a blues history curriculum which she teaches along with hands-on music instruction and performance. The curriculum is integrated with the Alabama state curriculum standards for American history, writing and music. 

Along with the history component, in-class “Blues in the Schools” residencies, ranging from 1 day to 6 weeks, team-teach singing, percussion and harmonica. These programs often end in a public performance featuring the program’s students. The popular interactive “Introduction To the Blues,” a 1-hour program suitable for large or small groups of all ages, features a full blues band and tells the story of the blues from its African roots, through sharecropping and the great migration to urbanization and electrification.

No musical instruments are required, the only materials needed are those already found in the classroom. All and any additional materials are provided.
