Dr. Elliot A. Knight
Deputy Director

It is with a great deal of pleasure to inform you that Dr. Elliot Knight has been selected to fill the position of Deputy Director of ASCA. He will assume this position immediately and begin his transition from Visual Arts Program Manager to his new and expanded responsibilities. He will continue with visual work in the coming weeks while making this important move within the agency.  

Al Head, ASCA's Executive Director said he is confident that Dr. Knight can make significant contributions to ASCA, short and long-term, with his knowledge, skills and energy clearly evident in his outstanding work over the past five-plus years.

Previously, Dr. Knight was the Visual Arts Program Manager for the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Director of the Georgine Clarke Alabama Artists Gallery in Montgomery.  Knight, an Opelika native, holds three degrees from the University of Alabama including a BA in Visual Communication, an MA in American Studies, and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies.  He currently serves as a board member for the Montgomery Public Art Commission, the Montgomery Art Guild, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Junior Executive Board and the University of Alabama Community Affairs Board of Advisors.  Knight is a Blackburn Institute Fellow.  He helped co-found and develop the nationally recognized Black Belt 100 Lenses Program, a participatory photography and arts program that worked with high school students in twelve Alabama Black Belt counties.  Knight developed and taught several courses at the University of Alabama in the Department of Art History, the Honors College, and the Department of American Studies.  He also served as Director of the Arts Living Learning Community at UA. 

Barbara Edwards, the former Deputy Director retired on April 30 after 39 years of distinguished service to the agency. 

Recruitment for a new Visual Arts Program Manager is underway.
